Seeking Deeper Understanding #007

SDTEST® has 28 different VUCA polls that calculate the 9,191 correlation values between stages of development according to the theory of Spiral Dynamics and answer options of these 28 polls.

We invite curiosity about the systemic mechanisms behind this correlation. There may be hidden variables that provide alternative explanations.

In our analysis of the poll "Psychological Wellbeing (by Carol D. Ryff)" we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1162 between the Personal growth. I gave up trying to make big improvements or changes in my life a long time ago / Strongly disagree and the Purple stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.055. This negative correlation of -0.1162 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1162 indicates that the more someone aligns with Purple values, the more they *don't* give up trying to make big improvements or changes in their lives. They would be more likely to strongly agree with the statement, "I have not given up trying to make big improvements or changes in my life."

While Purple values tradition and established communal structures, that does not necessarily mean total resignation or a lack of motivation for personal growth and improvement. In fact, within traditionalist worldviews, people may still strive to better themselves or their circumstances within somewhat narrower predefined roles and life scripts.

For example, a Purple father still hopes to provide better harvests and protection for his family over time, or a Purple artisan might work tirelessly to perfect her craft, making ceremonial masks for the village. Their horizon for growth operates within guardrails of customs and stability rather than threatening the dismantling of familiar bonds.

This helps explain why a negative correlation makes sense for Purple. Collectivist norms still allow space for individual industriousness and betterment, albeit not radical transformation that dismantles existing social cornerstones and rituals. Personal growth unfolds along accepted trajectories aligned with communal cohesion.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in life," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1087 between the Yes, I have been treated differently because of my age and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0869. This positive correlation of 0.1087 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1087 makes sense, given the Red focus on power, action, and commanding respect through bold self-expression without hesitation. Rules and norms that constrain Red's willful exertion of individuality would understandably breed backlash.

From a Red view, dynamic prowess and physical vitality deserve admiration regardless of age. Judging capacity based on shiftless categories like youth or seniority seems irrational - merit lies in demonstrable strength and skill. Red smashes hollow barriers obstructing its manifest destiny.

So whether youthful impatience or mature wisdom, those identifying with Red values would resent and rebel against external efforts to limit their ambitions based on ageist assumptions. Red recognizes no artificial expiration date on pursuing alpha status.

Thus, the correlation suggests that those exhibiting a Red orientation often experience discrimination when their age wrongly conveys vulnerability rather than vigor. Their power refuses to atrophy on cue. This external judgment only recharges Red’s determination to overcome imposed indignities through resilient self-reliance.

In the end, for Red, respect cannot be passively earned by counting years. It must be actively seized daily through steely resilience and irreducible life force from beginning to end.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in career," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0869 between the I don't know if our organization has systems in place to deal with cases of ageism and Blue stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0866. This positive correlation of 0.0869 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0869 makes sense, given Blue’s adherence to the established order, respect for hierarchical authorities, and rule-based operations. Addressing complex social issues like ageism in organizations involves nuanced consideration of biases.

According to Blue logic, proper channels handed down from above are trusted to maintain stability. Questioning or correcting elder decision-makers feels uncomfortable.

Additionally, Blue does not automatically analyze or disrupt conventions without cause, unlike Orange and Green. Organizational continuity relies on the system's assumed fairness. What has worked before endures.

So this correlation suggests those aligning with blue see institutional processes as righteous; upsetting them requires an invitation from leaders. Admitting ageist unknowns seems less plausible or urgent amid a rule-driven environment ordained to be just.

Blue’s correlation with admitted uncertainty around organizational ageism protocols suggests principled loyalty before complex, disruptive social evaluation. Order trumps ambiguity.

In our analysis of the poll "What will you do this week to look after your mental health?" we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0771 between the Practice mindfulness and the Orange stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0736. This negative correlation of -0.0771 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0771 makes sense, given Orange's rational, objective, and quantifiable approach to accomplishment. Practicing mindfulness requires sustained, patient attention inward - a faculty less developed in achievement-focused orange.

From an Orange perspective, valuable time examining thoughts and emotions takes away from designing, optimizing, and building external systems. There is skepticism around the business case for mindfulness without hard evidence of impact.

Additionally, mindfulness threatens to disrupt Orange's sense of intellectual control and confidence in empirical data as the supreme lens of reality. Emotions seem dangerously irrational, even weakening, compared to reason.

However, as more research demonstrates mindfulness' benefits for concentration, lowered stress, and boosted well-being, the Orange perspective may gradually integrate this mental skill as another valuable tool for enhanced outcomes. It may become another technique for greater efficiency.

For now, this negative correlation exposes Orange's blind spots around inner terrain, preferring to chart progress through statistics, systems, and engineered environments to manage wellbeing. The seeming illogic of mindfulness undermines Orange's reliance on logic.

In our analysis of the poll "Where would be your next most exciting opportunity?", we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0721 between the International market leader and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0625. This negative correlation of -0.0721 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0721 highlights an important nuance around Green values in business contexts. While oriented toward community, Green still operates skillfully within market realities even if it doesn’t fully embrace competitive, hierarchical corporate dynamics.

The correlation suggests that those who identify with egalitarian Green principles may hesitate to pursue leadership explicitly defined in capitalist terms, like maximizing international profit and market share. However, purpose-driven leadership appealing to Green ideals around social justice and sustainability would likely attract strong engagement.

So, while not eschewing business success, Green defines leadership beyond positional power and wealth generation. Contributing to collaborative, grassroots movements that empower everyday people excites Green more than titles. Market dominance feels misaligned with Green's aims of elevating marginalized voices.

In sum, this shows Green recognizes the pragmatic necessity of business while seeking leadership opportunities that better resonate with its core values. The correlation indicates that leading transformational community projects outweighs leading multinational firms from a Green perspective. Visionary influence through compassion and empowerment eclipses desiring authority for its own sake.

In our analysis of the poll "A.I. and the end of civilization (Elon Musk)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1077 between The state should exercise control over the development of the artificial intelligence / Strongly agree and the Yellow stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0906. This negative correlation of -0.1077 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1077 makes sense, given Yellow’s integrative worldview balancing order and freedom. While seeing value in governance and collective cooperation, imposed control risks inhibiting discovery.

Yellow recognizes the unprecedented complexity of emergent technologies like AI. Navigating uncertainty requires space for decentralized innovation, not just top-down restraints. Multi-stakeholder participation enables wiser solutions.

Furthermore, Yellow understands crises ignite breakthroughs. So dire warnings can activate responsibility, not reactionary restrictions. Yellow believes in transformative potential being unlocked through the conscious inclusion of marginalized voices.

This speaks to Yellow’s ability to integrate opposites - embracing regulation while cultivating autonomy and exploring technology’s shadows while unleashing its promise. By holding paradoxes, Yellow transcends trade-offs.

Yellow agrees that wisdom must guide AI’s development but disputes that centralized authority alone can define wisdom. Insight arises by empowering diverse circles of stakeholders in decision-making. This correlation reflects Yellow’s paradoxical and expansive approach.

In our analysis of the poll "I live thinking about my past, present or future," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0742 between the Present and the Turquoise stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0647. This positive correlation of 0.0742 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0742 resonates with a key dimension of the holistic Turquoise worldview - its emphasis on mindfulness, presence, and grounding in the eternal Now.

While appreciating lessons from the past and maintaining hope for the future, Turquoise recognizes the power of fully inhabiting the current moment. The present comprises all we ever concretely have. Our actions align with evolving realities, not outdated assumptions, by anchoring awareness here and now.

Living in the present also connects us more palpably to the aliveness and interdependence of all beings in this immediate field of energy. We tap into the living matrix binding humanity, realizing our choices intricately impact everyone and everything.

Additionally, excessive future dreaming or past dwelling often breeds anxiety, discontent, and feelings of scarcity. Embracing today’s gifts nurtures gratitude for the abundance already available all around us.

Turquoise correlates with the present focus because we contact radical truth and recognize our embeddedness in flowing ecosystems bigger than our small selves. Savoring now fosters ethics and creativity moment by moment.

What insights do you gain from today's correlation? How might we study this relationship more carefully before deducing causation? We welcome respectful and wise perspectives!
